The Closet

CBE is on the Board of
The Closet of Greater Herndon

The Closet is a cool thrift shop in Herndon, with all profits donated back to the community. In 2020 the Closet was closed for two months and was still able to donate over $65K in grants, $45K in scholarships to local students and provided $51K in free clothing to qualifying individuals. Check out the Closet at

If you have any questions about participating as part of the Beth Emeth contingent, please contact Betsy Rock and Paula Yass.

There are three ways to support The Closet:

1 - Volunteer, 2 - Donate, 3 – Shop

CBE is one of 21 congregations in the Reston/Herndon area who have committed to providing volunteers to staff the Closet.

The Closet has suspended "congregation days" for volunteering at the store for the time being due to COVID-19. However, the store is open and volunteers are still needed! Many safety measures have been implemented to keep volunteers and clients safe.

The Closet has started to use a Signup Genius to help volunteers pick times that work for them. In addition, volunteers are always welcome to just show up. The Closet is a great place for high school and middle school kids looking for volunteer hours - the typical job is hanging clothing or putting merchandise out on the floor.

Questions about volunteering? contact Betsy Rock and Paula Yass.

If you are doing spring cleaning, the Closet appreciates your donations of a wide variety of new and gently used items, including:

  • ALL men's, women's and children's clothing, shoes, outer garments
  • Household items, dishes, linens, blankets, décor
  • Electronics (current technology only), sporting goods, suitcases
  • Toys, books, cds/dvds, musical instruments, cameras
  • Small furniture, small appliances (no large furniture)

Please check The Closet's Donation Page for more details on donating. Donations are accepted Monday – Wednesday and Friday – Saturday, 8:00 AM-12:00 PM. No donations are accepted on Thursdays.

Ready to donate? Just drive around the back of the building and someone will help you bring in your donations. If you have any questions about donations, please call 703-437-7652.

The Closet is like a small department store... they have so much! Store manager Pat Rhoads maintains a high level of quality control that leads to amazing bargains.

There are clothes for all members of the family; many are new with tags. Check out the glassware, dishes and small appliances. The toys and sporting goods are well organized. All electric items are checked out by volunteers and are in working condition. Lamp shades, vases, purses, shoes... so many nice things!

Shop Monday-Saturday 10-5; also Monday & Thursday hours extend to 8 PM. You will feel great doing it and will be contributing to the community at the same time.

Ready to shop? We are ALWAYS ready to shop!!
