St. John Neumann/New Hope Shelter Meals

Week of January 17, 2021

Donation Deadline: January 10, 2021 (Quicklink to form below)

Normally, below you would see a signup below for volunteers to prepare & bring food and to help serve at our signature roast chicken dinner at St. John Neumann Catholic Church on Lawyers Road in Reston, usually on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Like the December 24 dinner at Epiphany Episcopal, this has always been one of our favorite volunteer activities because we have so many families participate and the overall feeling is one of warmth and good cheer and consideration for our homeless guests.

As you can imagine, this year continues to derail and change everything -- the homeless in the eastern part of Fairfax County will stay in one location near Bailey's Crossroads, with only New Hope Housing (the non-profit partner in this effort) employees on site. But they still need our help with food!

In order to keep our commitment to this effort, we have been asked to sponsor lunches and breakfasts for two days during the week. Because of Covid precautions, as well as having the Beth Emeth building mostly closed as staff works from home, it would be difficult to arrange a large number of drop-offs of the needed food items. So a few members of the Social Action Committee, led by project captain Jill Weisman, will use your donations to purchase items and organize them into packaged meals, then deliver them to the temporary shelter location. We will provide healthy choices, which we have priced out at $4.00 per meal when purchased in bulk.

We do have one family participation opportunity -- we will need approximately 300 lunch bags, and having your child(ren) decorate a stack of brown paper bags with pictures and messages can be a great personal touch! We are asking each family who signs up to purchase & decorate 25 bags (4 or 8 lb size, also labeled #4 or #8). Then, the bags can be left in a rain/snow-proof plastic bag (weighed down as needed) at the front door of the building any day except Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will be needed by Sunday, January 10. (Leaving them by the door Sunday later afternoon/evening is OK; we'll be picking them up Monday morning, June 11!).

We are hoping that you will be willing to sponsor four ($16) or eight meals ($32) for our local homeless. If you can do so or can make a donation of a different amount towards a meal, please use the form below. Beth Emeth members can pay now or charge the amount to your bill and pay later using any method; community members and other guests will be asked to pay by credit card.

The Social Action Committee wants to express our deep gratitude for helping to feed the homeless with healthy choices during the winter.
