Youth Director:

Abby Kerbel
703-860-4515x128

To Parents:

Young people flourish at Beth Emeth, inside and outside the synagogue.

Our kids benefit from a wealth of extracurricular activities and are constantly forced to make choices about where to spend their time.

The goal of the CBE Youth Department is to provide Jewish experiences that are so fun and rewarding that the kids will choose to include them into their already-packed schedules.

Meet Youth Director
Abby Kerbel

Born and raised in the DC area, Abby is a graduate of the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School.

After a semester in Israel during her senior year of high school, she made the move up to New York following high school and, in 2010, received degrees in Middle Eastern Studies and Jewish History from Barnard College and List College.

She is newly graduated from the William Davidson School of Jewish Education at The Jewish Theological Seminary of America with a Masters in Jewish Education.

While in school, Abby was a teacher at the Ansche Chesed Hebrew School on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

A proud Seaboard USY alum, Abby has enjoyed staffing USY events for the past 5 years. In her spare time, she loves Israeli dancing, baking, and feeding people in general.

"I am thrilled that CBE offers youth programming through Bonim, Machar, Kadima, and USY.  Why?  In my girls' schools, they often have no other Jewish kids in their classes.  In addition to their other school friends, it is important to me that my girls have the opportunity to develop friendships with others who share our holidays and traditions.  Both within CBE and through regional programming, youth programs have met this need for our family."

Informal Jewish Education

It's called Informal Jewish Education, but the kids know it has nothing to do with school.  Under the auspices of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) and guidance of adult advisors, even the most secular activities (bowling, mini-golf, etc.) can reinforce Jewish values and Conservative Jewish practice.  Advisors can also assure a balance of activities to include spiritual, cultural and community service activities along with the social events.

Other Activities

Occasionally, the Youth Department produces fun and fulfilling events for all of Beth Emeth's young people, regardless of their membership in any of the youth groups.  We also serve as a clearinghouse of information about other community-wide youth activities such as those at the JCC of Northern VA, Jewish Experience for Teens (JET), Israel Quest, Jewish Youth Philanthropy Institute (JYPI) and others.

Youth Subsidies

Sisterhood offers grants to assist with Jewish camping experience or Israel trip costs for children of Sisterhood members. The annual application date is July 31. Download the grant program details and application.

The Megan Miriam Berman Youth Fund has been established to help our youthful members participate in Youth activities such as travel to regional, national and international meetings.  Members who are active in the synagogue and in Jewish studies may be eligible.  Additional subsidies are available in cases of financial need; check the Youth Subsidy Policy** for details and then complete the Subsidy Application** to request assistance.

Completed forms should be sent or delivered to Linda Eisinger, CBE Executive Director.  And please remember to think of the Megan Miriam Berman Youth Fund as you consider donations to the Beth Emeth community.

Jewish Youth Philanthropy Institute (JYPI)

JYPI welcomes 8-9th graders and 10-11th graders. For both groups, CBE provides a subsidy to help you participate in this program that meets on several Sundays starting early in 2013. Application form coming soon!

The ultimate goal, of course, is to provide the maximum number of opportunities for our kids to be with other Jewish kids.

To register for CBE Youth Groups, fill out the Membership Form. (You can use this form to sign up just for Youth Groups, and/or also for religious school.)  NOTE: if desired you can fill in this form on the computer before printing and signing it. Then, please mail/bring to CBE or fax to 703-860-5647 or scan and email to registration@bethemeth.org.

Please contact Abby Kerbel or any of the advisors for more information.

We Also Have Jewish Scouting

Cub Scouts

CBE has our very own Cub Pack 1884!

If you’ve been interested in scouting, but hate the idea of Friday night pack meetings, bacon and eggs at camp outs, or feel uncomfortable meeting in a church, then CBE’s cub scout pack has a place for your son.

Pack 1884 is sponsored by Beth Emeth, but is open to all boys, regardless of membership status, race, or religion.  We participate in Jewish Scouting activities, but we follow the same principles of scouting as all the local school groups.

If you have a son in in grades 1-5, come join Pack 1884 where you can:

  • Maintain your Jewish friendships while having fun with scouting.

  • Build leadership skills in a small, cohesive group with relaxed time commitment

  • Participate in the ever-popular Pinewood Derby!

Questions? Contact Dan Moldover, or Pack Committee Chairman Steve Greene.

Girl Scouts

In the past we have had an active Daisy Troop, doing community service, physical and social well-being activities and selling cookies to support our activities.  They used some of the money they earned to have a bowling party in the summer.

If anyone would like to re-start a CBE Daisy or Brownie troop, supplies and some funding are available -- please contact Abby Kerbel for more information.
