Worship at Beth Emeth

Joyous, spiritual, educational, and most of all participatory! Services are lay-led, and we encourage congregants of all ages to broaden their spiritual horizons by learning and/or improving their skills as service leaders, torah readers and active participants.

Our services are traditional and egalitarian, but with our own flavor. Rabbi Steve's short "Tefilla Moments" and Drashot are interesting and thought-provoking. Our award-winning Caleb's Challenge program allows our 5th-7th graders to reflect upon complex torah-related questions. One unique way we make chanting Torah more accessible is to have photos of torah readings -- in our actual torahs -- available online for practice.

Our Newest Minhag (Custom):

Birthday/Anniversary Aliyot: Second Shabbat of Every Month
In early 2007 we launched a new monthly tradition at Shabbat morning services – a group aliyah for everyone celebrating a birthday or anniversary during the month. Babysitting is  available, so please plan to attend services to be called to the Torah for an aliyah, and to be serenaded by the congregation! No need to RSVP for this honor, although you should identify yourself to the Super Gabbai or ushers when you arrive.

The Regular Non-Holiday Schedule:

Friday, 8:00PM: Shabbat Evening Service

(note: monthly additional 6:00PM Kabbalat Shabbat service, more info)

Saturday, 9:00AM: Shabbat Morning Services

Saturday afternoon (time varies): Mincha-Ma'ariv, for special occasions

Sunday, 8:30AM Morning Minyan

Wednesday, 8:00PM Evening Minyan (call the office to confirm; on rare occasions this minyan is replaced by one at a member's home during shiva.)

Federal holidays, 9:00AM Morning Minyan (Monday & Thursday holidays only)

This month's schedule of services, including holidays, monthly family service, and occasional Shabbat mincha-maariv services, can be found in the Shofar or the calendar.  Also, the weekly schedule is e-mailed on Thursday or Friday to the “Announce” e-mail list.  Sign up for this list .  You can also see the weekly schedule on the news page.

More Information:

Children's resources during services:

  • For your convenience, during Friday evening and Saturday services a play area for young children accompanied by a parent has been set up in classroom 3.

  • Kids! Don't forget to look for the collection of fun books to read through during services. They are colorful and even if you can't read, the pictures are great for looking through. They are located on the shelf under the Chumashim between the two tallit closets and await your attention. Let us know what you think of them. They were donated by the 2005-2006 Kindergarten and 2nd grade classes.

Daily Minyanim

To make a Minyan during the week for those saying Kaddish or observing a yahrzeit, the support of the Northern Virginia Jewish Community is greatly needed, (particularly during the winter months). The following northern Virginia congregations have daily minyanim (be sure to contact them to confirm the schedule):

  • 7:30AM, Thursday Morning Minyan at Congregation Etz Chaim, 2920 Arlington Boulevard, Arlington (9:30 if Federal holiday).

  • 7:30AM, Daily Morning Minyan at Agudas Achim, 2908 Valley Drive, Alexandria

  • 8:00PM, Daily Evening Minyan at Congregation Olam Tikvah, 3800 Glenbrook Road, Fairfax.

  • Additional Minyan times for several Maryland & DC area congregations are available from the Main Office upon request.

Questions?

If you prefer to call with questions: we’d rather not publish members’ home phone numbers, however they are in the synagogue directory or you can call the office at (703) 860-4515 ext 101.
