Students
Exhibit Artistic Interpretations of Torah
at MOCA DC Gallery
Artwork by a group of 8th, 9th, and 10th-grade students from CBE Chai
School’s “Parsha Project” class is featured
as part of an exhibit titled “Every
Picture
Tells a Story” on view through January 30, 2010, at MOCA DC Gallery, 1054
31st Street, NW, Washington, DC 2007.
The pieces will be on display through
January 30.
A special reception for
our student artists, their families, friends, congregants and the
public will be held at the gallery
on Saturday, January
23, 2010, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Please join us as all are
welcome!
According
to the class’s co-teachers, Paul Moskowitz and Jennifer
Judelsohn, each week’s parsha (Torah portion) provides an endless
variety of messages and guideposts that each of us can incorporate into our
lives. Sometimes the advice is obvious from the stories that unfold; other
times one must seek the hidden meanings beneath the surface. Through text
study and discussions led by Moskowitz, students in this unique class
learned how to interpret the Torah on different levels. Each student then
delved into an in-depth study and artistic exploration—led by Judelsohn,
herself an artist with a painting in the exhibit—of a particular parsha
of their choosing from the book of
Genesis, ultimately
creating the mixed-media artwork on exhibit.
The
teen artists include: Alix, Faye Aarons, Michael Anderson, Amanda Barkan, Josh
Biderman, Anna Lise Filippone, Kate Gorbach, Hannah Kaplan, Josh Katz,
Patrick Lesch, Geena May, Madeline Paul, Chiara Sauvage &
Jessica
Schwartz.
“I’m delighted to
include these pieces in the
exhibit,”
Quammen says. “They fit perfectly with the theme, and they’re
intriguing pieces of art in their own right.”
