WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
-
Sign up
for "Announce" & you'll get the latest news & info. about CBE activities,
every week. "Announce" is used only for official CBE announcements.
Generally only one or two messages are sent per week, including a list of
upcoming events and urgent announcements of an illness or a shiva minyan.
You must subscribe to the list (see below) to receive these messages.
-
Check out
other lists that let you be part of CBE mini e-communities. Just a
few are: "relschool", "beecc-announce", "mensclub", "sisterhood",
"discuss", "israel-discuss", etc. See below for instructions on how to
get more information and sign up.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
-
FOR
MOST OF US: To join each mailing list: see the chart below for
specific instructions for each list. Generally there are 3 steps:
-
Send a blank email to
LISTNAME-subscribe@yahoogroups.com (where LISTNAME is
cbe-va-announce or cbe-va-discuss or cbe-va-sisterhood or
whatever). Don't forget the "-subscribe" in the address, or your
request will get ignored by the system.
-
Wait to get an
acknowledgement back. It will ask you to confirm your list
subscription.
-
Click REPLY and SEND.
You're done!
Some people are "power Yahoo Groups users" and will
want to join the group instead of joining the list,
which allows you to use more of the functions of this service. However
our groups are unlisted so we won't get nasty spam. So to join the
group you'll need to send a message to
Jeremy Epstein with the listnames you want to join; he will send
you invitations that will allow you to choose the "Join the group"
option.
HOW DO I SEND A MESSAGE TO A
LIST?
-
See chart of
Yahoo Groups lists below; each one has a different address.
-
To
request that an urgent message be sent to the Announce list, send the
message to
cbe-va-announce-owner@yahoogroups.com . This will go to the
moderator, who confirms the urgency before sending it out.
-
To send a
non-urgent
item to the Announce list,
you can send it to
office@bethemeth.org and request that it be included in the week's
Announcements. Weekly deadline is Tuesday noon for the Announcements that
are sent out Thursday evening.
HOW DO I CHANGE MY E-MAIL
ADDRESS ?
WHO CAN I CONTACT FOR HELP?
Congregational Lists:
Committee
Lists (invitation only):
You must be a member of
these groups to send messages to them. If you are not a member of a
committee but want to send a message to it, send the message to the list
owner (listname-owner@yahoogroups.com), and that person will forward
the message to the list if appropriate.
If you think you should
be on one of these lists but have not received an invitation to join,
send an e-mail to: listname-subscribe@yahoogroups.com . Be sure to
send it from the e-mail address that you want subscribed.
FAQs (Frequently-Asked Questions) About Beth Emeth and Yahoo Groups
Q: Do I have to
read all this stuff?
A: Only if you have
questions about our mailing lists.
Q: What if I
want to receive the message at both home and work?
A: Use the instructions
above to join the list from both addresses.
Q: How will I
recognize messages sent to me on these lists?
A: The subject line will
start with "[Beth Emeth" followed by the name of the list.
Q: Will I get
spam as a result of the Yahoo! groups?
A: No email systems are
perfect, but Yahoo! makes a strong effort to prevent spamming. Your email
address isn't put on a web site where someone can "harvest" it. Having said
that, we can't promise you won't get spam. If you're really worried, create
yourself a free email account on Hotmail or somewhere like that, and use it
for email subscriptions. If you start getting too much spam on that address,
you can abandon it and switch to a new address (and adjust your
subscriptions).
Note that even if you get
spam on an address used only for mailing lists, that doesn't mean someone
gave your address away. Spammers do "dictionary attacks" where they try
combinations of letters and words to guess addresses. The more obscure your
address is, the less likely a spammer will guess it.
Q: Who can send
messages to the lists?
A: Depends on the list.
For announcement lists (such as announce and relschool-announce), only the
Beth Emeth staff can send. For committee lists, any member of the committee
can send to the list. The discuss and israel-discuss lists allow any member
of the list to send a message.
Q: How do I send
a message to a group?
A: Use the chart at the
top of this page. If you don't see the information you need, just send an
ordinary email message to
listname@yahoogroups.com (where "listname" is the name from above). If
it's an announce-only list, or one open only to members of the committee,
your message will be returned. In that case, send the message to the
committee chair (if you know who that is) or the list owner (listname-owner@yahoogroups.com,
and that person will make the decision whether to forward the message to the
list.
As the lists are set up,
they will all be listed on this page (http://www.bethemeth.org/newslist.htm)
Q: Why the silly
"cbe-va" on the front of each name?
A: Common names like
"announce" would be unavailable because someone else got them years ago;
putting "cbe-va" on the front ensures that the list name is unique to us.
Q: Can I create
a new list (such as for my Havurah or for a group I'm interested in)?
A: Sure! You can do it
yourself, or send the name of the list, a one sentence description of what
it is, and the initial set of members to
Jeremy Epstein. I'll do all the work for you. After that, you can
manage the list yourself (you must have a Yahoo! ID to do that), or I can
manage it for you.
Q: Where do I go
to get more information?
A: Look at
www.yahoogroups.com, or send your question to
Jeremy Epstein!
