2012 Winning Entries

Theme 2012

God is not a hypothesis derived from logical assumptions, but an
immediate insight, self-evident as light. He is not something to be
sought in the darkness with the light of reason. He is the light.

Abraham Joshua Heschel

2012 First Place Co-Winners

CO-WINNER: The Light

                -- Geena May

CO-WINNER: Understanding

God is mysterious to those that try to understand him
Yet a beacon of hope for those that need comfort
Try to understand him and you will be disappointed
Understand his teachings and you will be rewarded
Not a problem to be calculated or solved
But a mirror to see ourselves

If am for myself alone, what am I?

And if not now, when?”

Megan's Muse Winner 2011: Sophie Isakowitz

Before the Moment Passes By

I can hear children crying.

I see a bird soaring swiftly in the night sky.

The smell of sweat and dirt fills the air.

Carts pass by little huts.

Robyn Freidin  - Blurred Time

Reflections

If I am not for me, who will be?

Love for who you are will set you free

If I can't respect myself how can I expect others to either?

2010 Winning Entries

Theme 2010

An Eternal Window

In a garden I once heard

a song or an ancient blessing.

And above the dark trees

a window is always lit, in memory

of the face that looked out of it

and that face too

was in memory of another

lit window.

The selected poetry of Yehuda Amichai/edited and translated from the Hebrew by Chana Bloch and Stephen Mitchell. Harper Collins: 1992.

Open Hearts

The sky turns grey as the rain clouds shift into view.  It is drizzling now, a soft pitter-patter that soothes my mind as I sit and watch the world.  The leaves bounce as tiny droplets land on their broad backs.  The birds chirp mournfully, awaiting the sunshine’s return.

I do not know when I started to realize I had left the light on in my room.
