An Annual Creative Arts Competition for CBE Confirmation Students
to Honor the Life of Megan Miriam Berman

Theme 2010

An Eternal Window

In a garden I once heard

a song or an ancient blessing.

And above the dark trees

a window is always lit, in memory

of the face that looked out of it

and that face too

was in memory of another

lit window.

                       Yehuda Amichai

From:

The selected poetry of Yehuda Amichai/edited and translated from the Hebrew by Chana Bloch and Stephen Mitchell. Harper Collins: 1992.

Megan’s Muse is an annual creative arts competition for current Congregation Beth Emeth (CBE) Confirmation students, sponsored by CBE’s Sisterhood.  Its purpose is to stimulate creative thought and expression as inspired by Judaic writings.

Each year a “theme” is chosen by a panel of judges, and a quote or verse is chosen from traditional or non-traditional Jewish writings.  Entries are judged by the Confirmation student’s ability to convey their understanding and interpretation of the theme via a creative medium.

One winner will be chosen.  The winner of Megan’s Muse receives a $500 award, and the the judges have the option to award more than one.  The hope of Sisterhood is that the winner will use this award to further enrich themselves spiritually, creatively, or academically.

Morgan Fuentes -- "Memories" --  April 24, 2010 — I interpreted the quote through dance. I choreographed a dance that I thought represented the quote. My dance piece is about a girl who just lost her best friend. She starts out mad and infuriated that god took her best friend away from her. Then I draw a window with my hands and this signifies her seeing life in a diffrent way. She has now accepted the fact that her friend is gone and has decided to live life to its fullest. She lives life for her friend since her friend now can't. She becomes happy and my movement gets less angry and smoother. (Can't see video? View on YouTube.)

Jake Hirsch -- "Cycle" -- May 23, 2010 — A short film I made with stop-motion paper animation for Megan's muse. Enjoy! (Can't see video? View on YouTube.)

Butterfly Dreams

“I’m cold.” The only thought I seem to have that’s mine these days

I used to run.  I used to laugh.  I used to have fun, in so many ways

But then I grew, and the storm came tumbling in,

Thrashing, swishing, covering everything in sin,

When the storm stopped everything was frozen

“The Window Of Remembrance”

A miracle,

An Eternal Window, Images that proceed forever in time.

A window filled with images that never ever settle inside your head.

Images of pure sorrow and sadness.

         --- Alyssa Rozines -- Continued:  Entry 2 - Window of Remembrance.pdf**

Never Forget

7 months ago I enlisted in the war, secretly, after my boyfriend was recruited to a base in Paris. I knew better than to trust him and his womanizing ways.

I planned to keep an eye on him, that’s all.

Although I wanted to be an actual soldier, I settled for a nursing job with the Army Nurse Corp, and requested to be located in Paris.

          --- Amalia Harte  -- Continued:  Entry 3 - Never Forget.pdf**

Open Hearts

The sky turns grey as the rain clouds shift into view.  It is drizzling now, a soft pitter-patter that soothes my mind as I sit and watch the world.  The leaves bounce as tiny droplets land on their broad backs.  The birds chirp mournfully, awaiting the sunshine’s return.

I do not know when I started to realize I had left the light on in my room.

          --- Hannah Kaplan -- Continued:  Entry 11 - Open Hearts.pdf**

RUACH

Randomly, we break into song,

About what, nobody cares.

We bounce off each other,

Each time getting louder, singing with more Ruach than before.

There is such joy, such Ruach in the air.

We sing and yell, dance and scream;

Like a pack of ravenous lions, attacking a gazelle.

          --- Josh Biderman -- Continued:  Entry 14 - Ruach.pdf**

Hope

This poetry theme is about hope

Not hope about the people or even the world

But hope about the memory

Of a boy or a girl

Even if they are gone

From our lives, they were taken

Their essence will remain

And our souls will awaken

          --- Paul Revesman  -- Continued:  Entry 23 - Hope.pdf**
