Jewish Youth Philanthropy Initiative
(JYPI)
For 8th & 9th Graders
Spring 2012
This spring, five Northern
Virginia Jewish congregations/temples are partnering with the Partnership
for Jewish Life and Learning (PJLL) to run a Collaborative Teen Philanthropy
Group for interested 8th and 9th graders.
Each teen will donate $250 (a
tzedakah contribution) to the collective grant pool, which will be matched
by synagogue and PJLL contributions. Students will then meet seven times as
a group with program facilitators for an orientation, site visits to four
organizations to hear presentations of grant proposals for funding, a
funding session to allocate the grant pool dollars and an end of program
celebration to award the selected grantees.
This is an excellent opportunity
for students to participate in a hands-on tzedakah project, become familiar
with a variety of worthy
organizations (both Jewish and non-Jewish,) and learn how to make difficult
allocation decisions. In addition, teens may count program hours toward
community/school service requirements.
