or 703-860-4515 x 101. Tickets are not needed for children and teens.
-

receive tickets free of charge. However, a letter from the guest’s
congregation confirming his or her status must be attached to the
Additional Ticket Request Form at the time it is submitted
to the synagogue office.

Parents maintaining a Family or Single Parent membership (not an
Individual or Couple membership status) may receive tickets free of charge
for their adult children who are full time students.

-
Not a member? No problem, please

Holidays. Here's what you need to know:
-
Non-members may
purchase tickets at a cost of $175 per ticket for each holiday.
Tickets for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are $350.
-
For
non-member families with young children who wish to participate in a
family-friendly service, we invite you to join us for our Family Service
on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Thursday, September 9, 2010, at 4:00
pm. Please call 703-860-4515 ext 101 for detailed information on
location. The cost is $150 per family, and these tickets are ONLY for
the Family Service.

Non-member families whose children are enrolled in BEECC (our
preschool) are invited to be our guests this holiday season, and will
receive free tickets for all High Holiday services.
-
If
you purchase tickets and then join CBE before December 31, 2010, the
full price of your tickets will be credited to this year's dues.
2. SECURITY
During Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur the number of worshippers coming and going at the synagogue
increases dramatically. Over the past few years we have been taking steps to
handle the larger crowds smoothly, as well as to maintain security in and
around the building. Though we are unaware of any specific threats, we must
always maintain a level of vigilance commensurate with the area in which we
live.
Because our building is
filled to capacity during the High Holidays it is necessary to use a ticket
system in order to allow our congregants and known guest(s) access to
services. All worshippers must enter via the front doors. As you approach
the front doors, please display your tickets for verification. Thank you for
your patience and cooperation.
3. PARKING
Due to low usage in prior years and budget
constraints, the shuttle bus service and overflow parking have been
discontinued. Parking is available in the neighborhood when the CBE
parking lot is full. Please be considerate of our neighbors. For
everyone’s safety, please use the sidewalks. Police Officers are on duty to
assist you in crossing the street. CBE volunteers will direct traffic in the
parking lot early in the morning. A sign will be placed at the entrance to
CBE when the parking lot is full. When dropping-off people at the entrance,
please pull forward as far as possible to avoid traffic back-up into the
roadway. Please do not park on the grass or along the yellow curb.
In addition to our permanent Handicap Parking,
temporary spaces are marked with signs. These spaces may still be
available when the general lot is full.

Selichot,
the first
service of the High Holiday period, will take place on Saturday,
September 4, 2010, when we prepare spiritually for Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur.
The Selichot service is designed to help us direct our hearts and minds to
the process of teshuvah. At the service, we begin to examine our deeds of
the past year, seeking
forgiveness from God, and promising to improve our behavior in the New
Year. Some
of the prayers and music for the Selichot service are taken from services
for Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This provides a musical transition between the
current year
and the New Year.
The evening will begin
with a program, desserts and beverages. The program will include
viewing the Ziegler School’s "Choose Life: High Holy Day Conversations"
followed by
discussion. This year's DVD will feature Rabbis David Wolpe, Edward
Feinstein and
Brad Artson. Last year’s program, which featured the second DVD in this
series, was
very well received!
Our special Selichot
Program will begin at 9:00 pm. The meaningful Selichot service,
during which we will acknowledge the memorial plaques dedicated within the
past year,
will begin at approximately 11:00 pm.
-
Teen Services
will be held in the tent on the first of Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur.
These services will include traditional High Holiday liturgy, the Torah
Service, and Hebrew
and English readings that are especially relevant to teens. On the second
day of Rosh
Hashanah at 10:15 am, a teen “kibitz and kumsitz” will be held in a
classroom. Teens
who wish to follow a traditional service second day are welcome to join
their parents
in the Sanctuary. For more information and to sign up for parts of the
service, please
use the
teen
form or contact
Kara Rosenwald at 703-860-4515, ext.128,
KARA@BethEmeth.org.
(Note: teens are also encouraged to volunteer
for
babysitting and/or to apply for a paid aide position, using the
teen form.)
-
Family Service:
Rosh Hashanah is filled with so many “sweet” songs and stories to
share with our children. This year the Family Service will be held at 4:00
pm
at Frying Pan Park. Casual clothing and appropriate shoes are
advisable. Bring chairs.
Following services, stay for the congregational Tashlich and Picnic
Dinner!
(See next item for more info.)
-
There will be a Tashlich & Picnic
Dinner for ALL at Frying Pan Park on the first
day of Rosh Hashanah, Thursday, September 9, 2010. Meet at 5:00 pm under
the Picnic
Pavilion at Frying Pan Park, right near the visitor center. The group will
hike to
“running water,” on a path that is jogging stroller passable and can be
walked by kids
as well as adults. Casual clothing and appropriate shoes are advisable.
After
“casting away our sins,” we will join together for an enjoyable picnic
dinner to
start the New Year. Bring picnic blankets and/or chairs and a dairy/parve
dinner.
For more information please contact
KARA@BethEmeth.org. Heavy rain will cancel this program.

USHER AND VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
CBE ushers serve a very
important function at our synagogue. They ensure that the spiritual
experience for all worshippers is paramount during the High Holiday
services. These volunteers are a valuable resource to help keep the service
running smoothly as they assist in locating congregants who have honors,
finding parents who may be requested by the babysitters, aiding in locating
seats for congregants as space fills up or assisting in evacuation
procedures. They also provide a core of alert eyes throughout the building.
Please volunteer to be an usher, and complete usher training. Much help is
needed throughout the High Holiday season. Just one hour of your time can
make a difference.
All volunteers will receive an informational packet that
describes the ushering duties and assignment(s). One training session
(optional) will be held on Sunday, August 29, 2010. We welcome both men and
women. High school juniors and seniors are welcome as volunteers. Since we
encourage them to attend the Teen Services, we ask that they volunteer 9:00
am - 10:00 am (BEFORE the Teen Service), 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm (AFTER the Teen
Service), or during any other High Holiday service.
This year we are using a new web site (VolunteerSpot) to
facilitate usher signup. To volunteer, please first visit the
CBE High Holiday Usher web page. This page includes: (1) The Usher Station
descriptions,
(2) The link to usher signup on VolunteerSpot and (3) Site Use Guide and FAQs.
If you do not have
Internet access or if you have any questions, please
contact Ted Benjamin. Thank you for
generously donating your time during these days of introspection.

please make checks payable to CBE

If you
have any questions, please contact the Office at
703-860-4515 x 101 |
If you require seating to
accommodate special needs, such as wheel chairs, medical situations or
other assistive devices, CBE makes every effort to provide a section of
seats that are easily accessible. A seat reserved for special needs
includes an additional seat for one accompanying adult only – note
that this does not apply if two family members request special needs
seating. Call the CBE office, 703-860-4515 x 101, if you have any
questions. Special Needs seating is held until 10:30 am. Please be
aware that assistive listening devices and a stair lift to the bimah are
also available. See one of the ushers in the lobby for assistance.
Corinne Jacobson is
coordinating the High Holiday Babysitting Co-op this year. Anyone wishing
to help with the Co-op, please
contact
Corinne Jacobson.
Requests to participate
in the Babysitting Co-op can be made
online at
www.bethemeth.org/highholidays/babysitting
(coming soon) or by
downloading the pdf form. You will be notified about your shifts via e-mail.
Babysitting for
infants through first-graders is available to CBE members during the
following times:
Thursday, Sept
9, 2010 (Rosh Hashanah 1st Day) 9:00 am - 1:00 pm,
Friday, Sept
10, 2010 (Rosh Hashanah 2nd Day) 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Friday, Sept
17, 2010 (Kol Nidre) 6:15
pm - conclusion
Saturday, Sept
18, 2010 (Yom Kippur)
9:00
am - 1:00 pm
In the past we have asked for parents to babysit for
three hours over the High Holidays. However, this year Yom Kippur falls on
a weekend. Therefore we have the option to have the Girl Scout troop that
babysits for us on Kol Nidre babysit for us as well on Saturday morning of
Yom Kippur. This will reduce the number of hours each parent will need to
babysit.
For a nominal fee of $10 to help pay the Girl Scouts,
you can opt-out of 1 hour of babysitting and only work 2 hours. The hours
we will need parent involvement will then be 9:00 am – 1:00 pm on the two
days of Rosh Hashanah, but only 9:00 am -10:00 am or 12:00 pm -1:00 pm on
the Saturday of Yom Kippur. You must still indicate on the forms the hours
your child(ren) will be in babysitting during all four services to ensure
an adequate number of sitters. Participation in youth programming is an
integral part of our babysitting program. Children attending babysitting
will attend the appropriate aged youth service.
Light snacks will be provided during babysitting. In
deference to our Kashrut policies, please do not bring foods into the
building other than baby bottles, unless your child has food allergies.
Parents should label any items they bring with them.
Please sign up by contacting Kara Rosenwald at 703-860-4515 X 128,
kara@bethemeth.org,
or mail
sign-up form to CBE.
High Holiday Greetings
will be printed in a booklet with the Annual Appeal Donations. The booklet
will be available during High Holiday services to wish your CBE family and
friends “L’Shana Tova Tikatevu.” You can
download the form here.
The Memorial Booklet is
a lovely way to remember your friends and family who are no longer with us
at the holidays. These booklets are available throughout the year at all
Yizkor services. Please remember to
submit your form each year. A minimum
donation of $18 per name is requested for the Memorial Booklet. This would
also be a good time to consider purchasing a
Memorial Plaque in memory of
your loved one(s). The cost of a Memorial Plaque is $350.
The Machzor (High
Holiday Prayer Book) is available for purchase at the Marilyn Rosenberg
Sisterhood Giftshop for $25.00. This beautiful addition to your Judaic
library ensures that you will have a Machzor, no matter what time you
arrive for services, since we have a limited supply of Machzorim. Books
are available for pickup at time of purchase. You can pre-reserve your
copy using the order
form.
The cost for a Lulav
and Etrog Set is $54.00. Orders will be available at CBE Office on
Tuesday, September 21, 2010. (Download
the form)
Please contribute food
on Friday, September 17, 2010 for the Reston Interfaith Emergency Food
Pantry.
More information and food pantry wish list.
The Annual Sukkot
Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2010. (RSVP
form.)
Torah Fund is a way for
each member of our congregation to support the Conservative Movement. The
Women’s League of Conservative Judaism’s goal is to raise scholarship

and Social Workers can be educated. Please add the Torah Fund to the
worthy causes in your life.
See the flyer for more details. All
contribution levels are appreciated. For any questions, please contact
