Resources for Gabbaiim

Gabbaiim and Super Gabbaiim perform important functions at Congregation Beth Emeth Torah Services, and "Playbooks" for each of these roles are provided below to help you learn and refresh your Gabbai skills. We've also provided audio files of the chanted phrases used to call different people to the bema for the first aliyah on Shabbat and weekdays. If you have questions or would like to learn more about becoming a Gabbai or Super Gabbai at Beth Emeth, please contact David Cerny.

Floor Gabbai Playbook (Click here to download pdf)

This manual is designed to assist individuals to perform the functions of Floor Gabbai (formerly called Super Gabbai), or service floor leader, during a Torah service at Congregation Beth Emeth. This handbook addresses various kinds of Torah Services held on Shabbat (morning and afternoon), Festivals and weekdays. By design it does NOT cover the High Holidays.

Audio Files of Calling Congregants for the First Aliyah

Below are recordings of how to call the first aliyah for Shabbat and weekday services. Festival and High Holiday morning services are the same as Shabbat. Sunday Rosh Chodesh, Saturday Mincha and Yom Kippur Mincha are the same as weekday services. Various combinations of honorees are covered whether the honoree is a man, woman or a couple. Some honorees like to be called with the Father’s name only while others wish to use the Mother’s name as well. All of these combinations are covered.

Click on the play button (arrow) next to your selection to play the audio file using Yahoo Media Player. You will hear your selection and then the player will continue down the page until you click the stop button (2 parallel bars.)  Note: If this does not work on your computer, click on the name of the file, which should call up your computer's default audio program such as RealPlayer or Windows Media Player or QuickTime and play the mp3 file you have chosen.
