EDEC Final Report
Education Director Exploratory Committee
(EDEC)
(September, 2008) As the congregation begins the process of seeking a new
Education Director, CBE President Paul Levine created the Education Director
Exploratory Committee (EDEC) to re-evaluate both the duties and skill-set
required of the person to fill this position before beginning the formal
search process. Since the congregation last sought an Education Director
more than seven years ago, the core structure of our Religious School has
changed along with the implementation of a newly improved curriculum. We
also have seen a shift in our demographics to a smaller number of families
with Religious School-aged children within the overall congregation. All
these factors considered, the timing seemed right to assess the role of the
Education Director and to develop a new job description that will best serve
the current and future needs of our school and our congregation as a whole.
The EDEC, chaired by Bob Shor and comprised of
congregants with various experiences in education, administration and who
have children in varying stages of their Hebrew education, will meet
regularly through September and October and make its recommendations to the
CBE Executive Committee by November 1. In turn, the Executive Committee
will present the recommendation to the CBE membership. This timing will
allow the CBE leadership and staff to begin actively seeking a new candidate
for this position with the hope of filling the position by the 2009-2010
school year. A separate search committee will be established to support the
interview and selection process in the late fall/early winter.
The EDEC will be evaluating information from a variety of
resources including previous data collected by CBE’s Long-Range Planning
Committee and the Religious School Working Group. Members also will be
examining current demographic data of our congregation and the Northern
Virginia community, CBE enrollment data, membership data, staffing and
organizational charts. And finally, the committee will be developing a
brief survey for congregants to complete online.
With such a short-time
frame to complete this task, the EDEC will be looking to the congregation to
provide feedback in a timely manner. Our CBE families’ opinions are vital
to this process. All congregants also are encouraged to check the CBE
website and the weekly electronic announcements from the synagogue to stay
abreast of this committee’s progress. The committee welcomes all comments,
questions or concerns at any time, to
Bob Shor personally or
to the entire committee.
