Bone Marrow Drive

A big "Thank You" from CBE and the Cascio/Bresnick family to the more than 60 CBEers who participated in the bone marrow drive last week in support of Michele Bresnick's search for a donor match.  We are hoping that our joining the donor registry will result in a match for Michele or for other leukemia patients and will keep everyone posted.

It's not too late! If you weren't able to get to the drive at South Lakes High, you can call the National Marrow Donor Program's DC Office at (202) 638-0738 or Virginia (Richmond) office at (800) 627-7697 to make arrangements to be screened in the area.

Again, thanks to everyone for such a large turnout for this important drive.

Many of you know Faye Cascio. For those who don't, Faye was the principal of our religious school from 1986-2000 and blessed many of us and our families with her unending love and support. Now Faye very much needs the help and support of our CBE family. Her daughter, Michele Bresnick, was recently diagnosed with a form of acute leukemia, and will soon need a bone marrow transplant. No one in Michele's family is a match.

South Lakes High School in Reston, where Faye taught for many years, and of which Michele is an alumna, is going to host a bone marrow drive. Participants in the drive will be screened to join the Bone Marrow Registry, and then will be called only if a match is found to a patient needing a bone marrow transplant.

What: Drive to screen and sign up new members of the Bone Marrow Registry, to help find a match for Michele and/or for other patients in need.
When: Friday, December 12 from 2:00-7:00 PM.  Shabbat candlelighting is at 4:30 PM, however the Jewish precept of Pikuach Nefesh (saving a life) is considered a valid reason to participate even after Shabbat begins.*
Where: South Lakes High School cafeteria.
RSVP: Please contact Paula Slavsky at paula@bethemeth.org or 703-860-4515 x115 -- arranging an appointment time in advance is helpful but not mandatory.
Details: Please read below.

Click to view brief video about
donating bone marrow.

In order to join the Bone Marrow Registry, you only need to go through a brief medical screening process and then swab the inside of your cheek with 4 q-tips- THAT'S IT. No needles, no blood. Most people who are unable to donate blood (for whatever reason) ARE able to get into this registry. Please come by even if you've been deferred from giving blood. (You can also check the medical guidelines for the registry in advance.)

If you are unable to come to the bone marrow drive for Michele on December 12, you can still support the National Bone Marrow Program. The usual fee is $25, but NO ONE who comes to the drive at South Lakes will be required to pay a fee. You may make a donation to help cover the cost of those who go though the registry. Checks can be made out to South Lakes High School. Then one check will be written to the National Bone Marrow Program. Your check can be sent to Lindsay Trout - South Lakes High School -11400 South Lakes Drive Reston, VA 20191.

If you have any questions about bone marrow, please visit their site at www.marrow.org. The contact person for this drive is South Lakes faculty member Lindsay Trout. For further information, you may contact her at Ltroutblue@aol.com.

This event is under the auspices of the CBE Caring Committee. The CBE contact person is Paula Slavsky, who can be reached at paula@bethemeth.org or 703-860-4515 x115 [NOTE: this extension is currently out of service; use x156, which does NOT have voicemail]
