Talit!

During services, many people wear a talit, in English called a prayer shawl. A talit is worn over a person's shoulders. They come in many sizes and colors, and the most important parts of a talit are the knotted things, called tzitzit, on the four corners. The knots and turns of all four tzitzit add up to the number 613, which is the number of things God has commanded us to do. Therefore, when we wear the talit and see the tzitzit we are reminded of God's commandments.

Snow!

In warm weather, water falls from the sky as rain. When it's cold outside, it falls as snow.  This winter we've had plenty of snow - more than any other winter -ever! A little snow is fun - a lot, not so much. The snow is so deep it is hard to walk outside and hard to go anywhere in our cars. Right now, there are huge piles of snow all over the place. On sunny days, some snow melts. We've had so much snow that it's going to be a LONG TIME until it is all gone!

Frog Class fills their Tzedakah Jar for the Bears For Life Program

Hello Parents,

Congratulations to our Fabulous Frogs class for being the first class to fill their 'Reservoir Bear Tzedakah jar' with enough gelt for their Bears For Life program stuffed bear! Way to go Frogs! Your adorable stuffed bear has been ordered and will be delivered to your class as soon as it arrives!

All of our classes are well on their way towards their own stuffed bears as well; so please continue to support this wonderful program by sending in Tzedakah for your children. If your son or daughter happens to find a random coin; let them bring it into school to donate towards their classroom bear!

Remember, our goal is for each class to reach $23 in Tzedakah. When that goal is reached each class will get an adorable Teddy Bear in return for their efforts to help Israel with their terrible water crisis. How fun!

Thank you in advance for helping with Tikkun Olam. For specific Bears For Life program details, please see the Bears for Life web site.

Our Director at Super Sunday

Judy Fox-Tepper represented BEECC and CBE at the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington's "Super Sunday" donation appeal last Sunday, Feb 21.  Along with a few other directors of Jewish preschools she phoned members of the Jewish community to ask for their financial support of Federation.

From Your BEECC Director

BEECC DirectorDear Parents,

Oh today we'll merry, merry be,
Oh today we'll merry, merry be,
Oh today we'll merry, merry be,
And nosh some hamantashen!

Purim is such a happy holiday for children and their parents alike.  At BEECC we learned that though Esther was just one person, she saved the whole Jewish people.  Her story teaches us that every person can be a hero - every Jew is important!  To help remind us that every Jewish person can be like Esther, we make sure that the holiday is filled with fun - at BEECC it is a time for parties, costumes and carnivals.  We made crowns and masks, groggers and hamantashen!  We sang songs for our parents and special guests, played games and won prizes. On Purim it is a mitzvah to give gifts to your friends and all the children made special Mishloah Manot, gifts of food to bring to their families.

February was an abbreviated month for us at BEECC, cut short by what is now commonly known as the "Blizzard of 2010!"  We missed several days of school and many of our families had to deal with a loss of electricity and heat along with the dramatic amount of snow.  Many of our students brought in pictures of their snow activities to add to our school-wide "snow photo collage."   We hope March is dry and warmer as we look forward to Passover and our model seders!

B'Shalom,
Judy

Our community spirit has continued to grow stronger as the year has unfolded and we're looking forward to some more fabulous events in this second half of the school year. Thank you so much for supporting the MOVIE DAYS. The kids have been loving it, and we hear the parents are too! We have had a request to do the movie day on a Tuesday in March. It is tentatively scheduled for March 23, but we're in need of a volunteer Mashgiah for the event. Please contact beeccpa2008@yahoo.com if you are able to help out in this role. Additionally, we will need 2 parent volunteers. This event will not be cancelled, but the date may be changed if we can't fill these volunteer spots.

Todah Rabah to all the parents that volunteered their help at the BEECC Purim Carnival. A wonderful time was had by all. We appreciate all the extra effort and time our parents put in to make our school a fantastic place for our kids to learn, grow, and have fun.

Have a wonderful month and an enjoyable spring break.

Owl and Frog Update
The Outstanding Owls

February looked and felt very wintry as parents and children experienced several record-setting snowstorms. The Owls finished making penguin snow stick measures just in time for the big event. Unfortunately, our snow sticks had only twelve inches-not quite enough for the February blizzard. Everyone was happy to return to school and share snow stories.

We got right back into the swing of things by celebrating the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. The children compared the lives of both men, using a Venn diagram to display likenesses and differences. The Presidents Day holiday was the perfect opportunity to introduce coins and their values. We arranged coins in order by size, and compared values. Then we practiced using coins by making purchases at our very own Owl mail center. We bought  paper, stamps, and envelopes. After our purchases, we mailed our letters home. What fun! The children were given some early chemistry exposure as we hypothesized which cleaning agent would work best to shine our Lincoln pennies. Soap and water, toothpaste, ketchup, and vinegar were all used to scrub some pretty dull pennies. We charted our results, and displayed the shiniest ones.

Purim is so festive; we couldn't wait to hear the story of brave Queen Esther, wicked Haman, and loyal Mordecai. The children were busy tracing and painting crowns, assembling groggers, baking hamantaschen, and designing castles. Hamantaschen cookies gave us a great math opportunity-we graphed our favorite cookies; oreos, chocolate chip, gingerbread, sugar, or
hamantaschen! Thanks to our parents for joining us for Purim songs and helping us dress silly this week. We also enjoyed visiting with our dads, granddads, moms and special guests on He and Me day. The owls rotated to stations with guests in tow. We built castles from blocks, created a pattern from Purim symbols, used play dough to make hamantaschen cookies, and of course, decorated beautiful stars with special photographs. Looking ahead to March for sunnier days, warmer temperatures, and outdoor play!

Frog The Fabulous Frogs

"Let It Snow" has been the theme of one of our bulletin boards this month, and Mother Nature mirrored it again! The Frogs were prepared with the knowledge of how snow forms and how each flake is unique with a hexagonal shape. Our own shimmering flakes were created with a massive amount of glue, glitter and grit.

"M" Show and Share produced a major list of words, and a multitude of literature topics ranging from mittens, mice and meerkats to monsters, mountains and manners. The Frogs mastered upper and lower case "Mm" and then finely finished the letters by gluing mini macaronis. Although we marveled at "M", we are most definitely looking forward to letter "N."

The ground hog came out of hibernation to see his shadow, as usual, which portends six more weeks of winter. We reenacted (using flannel board materials) a ground hog emerging from his burrow and seeing /not seeing his shadow depending on the appearance of the sun. The Frogs then had a blast as their hands blocked the light of a flashlight and their hand shadows danced on the wall of our own "shadow studio." We then followed up with sketchin
g and tracing our shadow hands.

Constructing a mini model of a pond, a frog's natural habitat, provided the lesson for how a frog hibernates or estivates. Non fiction material and the artistry of In the Small, Small Pond inspired us to paint, tear, trace and collage materials to resemble a winter pond and sleepy frog. It really did!

The Frogs delighted in placing their stuffed bears and other creatures into our snow topped cave box. Everyone signed the outside of the cave and descriptions of our furry friends were attached to the other side. Photos were taken, of course. We discussed and examined the variety of food/things that a (black) bear eats before hibernation. We observed that our shopping bag full of bear food overlapped with people food with one exception, leaves. This additional food adds extra fat that keeps the bears body insulated from the cold. We demonstrated insulation in the following way: we placed cellophane, to simulate skin, on our palms and then put ice on top of it to see if we could feel the ice through the cello. We could! We then placed a Ziploc bag with fat (shortening) in it on our palms and placed ice on top of that. Guess what - our hands did not now feel the ice! To further adorn our bear cave we attached bears that we traced and cut and glued torn paper on to "fatten" them up.

The highlight of the month had to be when our Dads, Grandparents and others spent the morning in our classroom playing, molding playdoh, decorating star frames, drawing pictures, snacking with us and getting a glimpse of our morning routine.  We thank everyone for taking the time to join us. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Purim activities and projects, all part of a fun and silly week, were in progress as the very merry holiday approached. The Frogs loved the sing-along with our families and had fun baking our own hamantaschen. Hag Sameach!

Your children's kindness and comradery toward each other continues to grow, as does their generosity. The Frogs have reached our Bears for Life tzedakah goal of $25!

Until next month - think Spring...

Kitty Cat and Puppy Dog Update
KittenKickin' Kitty Cats

Perhaps the Kitty Cat's interest in igloos, ice and cold climates was taken a bit too seriously...hence, we had enough snow in Virginia to make our very own igloos! The sugar cube and icing igloos were so tasty and melted in our mouths much quicker than the big snow cone outside!

We are all thrilled to be back together with our friends and comfortably picked up where we left off. The month will finished with much Purim fun. Purim stories and songs captured the interest and imagination of the children. Purim was a lot of fun - all the children loved wearing costumes, playing games and winning prizes, many liked to make noise (although, nobody liked to listen to it!) and everyone likes cookies! The song "Horrible, Horrible Haman" was the class favorite, we  all sang the catchy tune! We shook our groggers whenever we heard the name of evil Haman. It is interesting to see and hear the different sizes, shapes and sounds of groggers .The children loved to measure, mix and bake hamantashen. They are very happy to taste test the filling...just to make sure it tastes delicious.

The children loved having their special family member come in for He and Me day. They take pride in themselves and their ability to be independent, self -sufficient and mature. They want to show you their school and their sense of accomplishment, belonging and ownership in their school. There has been tremendous growth since the beginning of the year; it is a joy to watch.

We look forward to many snow-free days in March!

Puppy Dog   Precious Puppy Dogs

Happy Snow from the Puppy Dogs!  Hope we are not wishing the same thing in our April newsletter!  We enjoyed sharing snow day stories about shoveling snow and building snowmen when we finally returned to BEECC. Everyone missed their friends and Morahs!

We began February wondering if Puxatawny Phil would see his shadow...next thing we know, Phil and Mother Nature deliver 28 inches of snow!  How's that for six more weeks of winter!

This month we learned about two of our most famous Presidents.  When we remember their stories, we  learn how to become better Americans and Jewish people too.  We also learned about hibernation and which animals won't be back until Springtime...if it ever comes back!

Then on to Purim!  What an awesome story...with the good, the bad and the beautiful!  We had a blast making crowns, hamentaschen and especially noise with our groggers!  What a fun week when you can dress up in silly socks, costumes and blue and white and come to school!  It was fun to have our parents with us for the Purim sing-along. The Carnival games were a lot of fun and we all loved getting prizes.

Happy Snow from the Puppy Dogs, see ya next month!

Dolphin and Teddy Bear Update

   Delightful Dolphins

On the heels of joyous Tu B'Shevat, in February we began our in-depth study of Purim. This festival is one of the most interesting and fun holidays that Jews celebrate! We read the story of Purim and got to know its main characters -- heroes Queen Esther and Mordechai, and the evil advisor to King Ahasuerus, Haman. The children learned many Purim songs in music class and had fun at the Purim sing-a-long with their parents. Purim art projects included:  bead necklaces; masks; crowns; and groggers (noise makers). We also made delicious hamantashen (triangle-shaped) cookies and Shalach Manot (gift bags) as is the custom of the holiday. BEECC hosted an age-appropriate carnival for its preschool students mid-week; many BEECC families also had fun at the CBE Purim services and a larger carnival for kids of all ages.

In March, we will do a short unit on nursery rhymes, which is always a big hit. Classic favorites like "Humpty Dumpty," "Baa Baa Black Sheep," Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," and "Hickory Dickory Dock" are always popular with the children. The kids love to sing the rhymes and perform the finger plays and/or act out the events of these stories. Perhaps we will see some budding actors and actresses emerge in the 2-day group!
The Dolphins all seem to be enjoying Show 'N Tell/Share, Ta'am Shel Shabbat, donating Tzedakah, and having Flipper go home each week. Thanks for keeping on top of our busy Dolphin schedule.

Teddy Bear  Terrific Teddy Bears

Although the snow, snow and more snow kept the Teddy Bears away from the classroom for a few days we were very busy Bears all the same. We look forward to dry, warmer weather so that we can once again enjoy the playground.

Our first annual "He and Me" Day was a big hit with the children. Thanks to all who joined us in the classroom to make a special craft, sing Purim songs during circle and share snack. To celebrate Purim we had fun making crowns, groggers and necklaces for our Purim sing-a-long and making yummy hamentashen.

In early March, the children will make a class banner for the BEECC Dance. The dance is a fun way to spend time with other BEECC families. We hope all the Teddy Bear families will get on the dance floor and show off their moves. We will also explore how the children have grown since September in our "All About Me" unit. Then from mid-March through the end of the month we will be learning about Passover. We will make seder plates, afikomen bags and frogs. Of course we'll be talking and singing about the Pharaoh, Moses and the importance of freedom. We look forward to sharing our class seder with you on Thursday, March 25th.  Save the date!

It is amazing how fast time is going by and how much the children have grown! Thank you for sharing them with us.

Budding BEECCers Update
Pony Cartoon Perfect Ponies
Despite a short month due to several snow days, in February the Ponies welcomed new student, Riddhi  Rajagopal! We made challah covers as part of our Shabbat unit, and celebrated Purim by making our very own groggers and attending the BEECC carnival! A good time was had by all. We also decorated a class poster for the BEECC Dance on 3/7, which I hope will be well attended by the Pony families. In March, if Punxsutawney Phil was right about seeing his shadow... we will finish our study of winter and explore the beginnings of Spring.  We will learn about the important Jewish holiday of Passover - its story and some of the ritual objects we use to celebrate it. In conjunction with the holiday we will try matzoh and sing some catchy tunes about baby Moses, frogs, and working as slaves. By now nearly all of the children are quite used to the school routine. With their increased comfort level, I hope to incorporate the parent education component this month. This will give the kids a chance to be with me without their moms for a short time (just like being in 2-day), and give the moms an opportunity to hear valuable information about a topic of their choice.

Chag Pesach!
