Mezuzah

This month I want to tell about something called a mezuzah.

A mezuzah is a container which Jews hang on doorframes. Inside the container is a piece of parchment (like paper) with Hebrew writing on it. The words are from the Torah and include the Shema, "Here, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One."

When we see a mezuzah, we are reminded that God wants us to be good and not hurt other people. If you've never seen a mezuzah before, there are many in the synagogue. Next time you are in school why don't you see if you can find one?  If you cannot, find ME - I'll help!

Spring into the Annual Family Dance and Silent Auction

Get ready for an afternoon of fun for the whole family at this year's Family Dance and Silent Auction on Sunday, March 7, 2010 from 3:30pm-5:30pm.

As in years past, the children will dance to wonderful music, but this year the music will be by "Daddy Eric the DJ." In addition to a light dairy meal, children will also be able to have their faces painted and enjoy an arts and crafts table.

This year's silent auction promises to be spectacular featuring items from all of our children's classes in addition to wonderful items donated by businesses and restaurants from the community.

We will also have the raffle again this year where you can choose from many fabulous items. Like last year, you buy your raffle tickets and then put them in the basket for the items that you would like a chance to win.

Tickets for the dance are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 at the door. Should you have any questions or need any additional information please contact Lauren Pinnar.

From Your BEECC Director

BEECC Director
Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that half of our school year has passed. Over the past several months I have gotten to know your children very well. Their initial shyness with me has given way to smiles and hugs. It has been a very busy few months; we have really become the best of friends and we have learned so much together! As we head into winter break, the secular New Year is near. A period of transition, it also can be a time of personal reflection of what we have accomplished.

The children were a frenzy of holiday spirit in September and October as they celebrated the fall holidays. Rosh Hashanah celebrations included "birthday parties for the world" and many classes studied Creation, displaying what they learned on their class bulletin boards. It was interesting when the Chabad Rabbi came to BEECC and taught how a shofar is made. Yom Kippur brought thoughts of how we can try harder to be our best in the coming year. We had a beautiful day for our Sukkot field trip to the pumpkin patch and a wonderful time was had by all! Some favorite parts of the trip included seeing the animals, picking the pumpkins and "bumping along on the straw ride!" Sukkot was a delicious holiday! The children loved eating snack in the synagogue sukkah and our first annual "Pizza in the Hut" was a big success. Rabbi Steve showed everyone the Torah on Simchat Torah and each child had the opportunity to hold the yad and "read" from the Torah. November brought Thanksgiving and we learned both about the holiday's origins and how it is celebrated today. With their teachers, the children talked about what they were thankful for and the importance of helping others in need. They learned about the Pilgrims desire for religious freedom. Food is a major focus of this American holiday, and all the children prepared for family Thanksgiving celebrations. In December, the smell of latkes permeated our classrooms as Chanukah filled our hearts and minds! The children learned about brave Judah Maccabee and his followers. They played the dreidel game and made beautiful Chanukiot. The four-year-olds sang Chanukah songs for the members of Hazak -- this truly was a special event both for the seniors and children.

As we begin a new decade in 2010, I look forward to sharing many more special times with you and your children. Thank you all so much for your support and most especially for sharing your wonderful children with me.  I wish you all a happy and healthy new year!

B'Shalom,

Judy

What a fun month our children had in December! With the Thanksgiving celebration at the beginning of the month to latke making at the end, BEECC is the place to celebrate with our friends.

The fun does not end in January. Don't forget to look for the evite to our 2nd Annual Wine Tasting event on Januray 23rd.  Additionally, we have a very exciting new fundraiser - DROP OFF Movie afternoon, Monday, January 25. And, plan for a Mom's Night Out in February. We are looking forward to seeing you at these very exciting events next month.

Calling all volunteers, we are looking to fill our BEECC PA board positions for the 2010-2011 school year. There are many opportunities, both big and small. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the very rewarding positions or have any questions, please contact us at beeccpa2008@yahoo.com.

Bears For Life Program Underway

Hello Parents,

Our wonderful Bears For Life program is underway! Each classroom has their very own recycled 'Bears for Life' bottle for collecting Tzedakah; hence our children will get to observe their Tzedakah collections add up for a new reservoir in Israel. Please see the Bears for Life web site for more details.

Please help support our program by sending in weekly Tzedakah for your children; and reinforce the importance of recycling at home. Our wonderful staff are teaching the children about Tzedakah at school, and talking about the water shortage in Israel as well. Our goal is for each class to reach $23 in Tzedakah. When the goal is reached each class will get an adorable Teddy Bear in return.

Thank you in advance for helping with Tikkun Olam.

Join us for A Night of Wine, Food and Friends

Please join us on Saturday, January 23, 2010, for a night of wine, food and friends. Have you ever wondered if price really makes a difference when buying wine? Well, come and join us at 7:30 pm at the home of Jamie and Mark Levin to taste some wines and decide for yourself. We will be sampling some of the best offering from Napa Valley, California in different price points to see if more expensive means better. Who knows, we might be surprised to find out that price really doesn't matter.

The cost is $25.00 per couple and includes wine, soft drinks, light hors d'oeruves and dessert. We ask that everyone brings their own wine glass with an identifying marker so we can keep all of the glasses straight!! Look for the evite coming out soon and please RSVP by January 16, 2010 so we may have enough time to purchase the appropriate wine and food.

Should you have any questions or need any additional information please contact Lauren Pinnar.

Owl and Frog Update
The Outstanding Owls

Hanukkah is a happy holiday that celebrates the triumph of a small army pitted against a much larger, and better equipped Syrian foe. That miracle alone made a great impact on the Owl class. But the impact loomed even larger when coupled with the idea that a small amount of oil would last for eight days and nights. I think this is especially important to our preschoolers as it is a reminder that great things may happen and we should not feel limited by our size. Even little people can accomplish great things!

It is no surprise that many of this month's activities centered around this joyous holiday. Our class enjoyed making unique clay hanukiahs as gifts for the holiday. The children looked at a large variety of menorahs on display in our classroom. We also took a walk to the gift shop to see the other interesting menorahs before creating our very own. We had such a wide array of shapes and designs! The children also became well acquainted with dreidels, by practicing the game, and making beautiful foil versions that now adorn the school hallway. We used a dreidel graph which served as a wonderful tool to reinforce the Hebrew letters shin, hay, nun and gimmel. In addition, the graph gave us practice counting, comparing, and ordering numbers. We followed up many of our dreidel activities by reading The Magic Dreidels by Eric Kimmel. This was a class favorite. Other Hanukkah activities included: making giant costume-sized dreidels, cooking latkes, patterning candles by color, and singing holiday songs for Hazak. Perhaps the most valuable lesson, was one in which we categorized items into "Needs vs. Wants." The children had to identify objects that are truly imperative to our lives, and those that are simply extras. Even at this early age, the children understood that many of their Hanukkah gifts were simply "wants" and that we must think of others that require "needs."

This month we also worked on many activities that centered around houses. The children sequenced the construction steps in building a home and became familiar with building terminology. We enjoyed comparing and contrasting homes of today to those of long ago. Not surprisingly, the idea of outhouses versus bathrooms brought squeals of laughter! Homes around the world were of great interest to the Owl class and we are in the process of constructing several of the homes we studied. Homes are constructed based on the resources, climate, and needs of the people in the region. An interesting idea for any four year old to ponder! We hope to be able to display our Israeli stone house, Native American teepee, and African mud hut in the near future. Of course, no house unit would be complete without a reading of the Three Little Pigs. Everyone had fun drawing and later using straw, sticks, and red paper bricks to adorn their pigs' homes.

All of our learning this month was enhanced by our weekly Hebrew class taught by Karen Smith. She coordinates our class learning with Hebrew lessons as a tie-in. Thanks also to Miss Carol for helping us learn so many Hanukkah tunes. They added a festive mood to our class.

The Owls had a busy December, and are looking forward to being together again in 2010.

Morah Joan/ Morah Nancy/Morah Susan

Frog The Fabulous Frogs

The Fabulous Frogs spent most of an abbreviated December happily and heartily preparing for and celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. This just happened to coincide with our "show and share" letters H and J.

First, though, the Frogs joined the Owls, Puppy Dogs and Kitty Cats in a belated but very festive Thanksgiving feast where we sang songs, stuffed ourselves and enjoyed the closeness of our family and friends. Our contribution was a sweet cranberry sauce and some enthusiastic songs of thanks. Our favorite part was actually decorating our tablecloths with pictures of ourselves, our families and friends, and nature. We did our tablecloth drawings on the floor and we loved it!

Our beautiful Havdalah boxes, complete with our own braided candles, Kiddush cups and fragrant hand filled spice jars were put on hold when an early December snow canceled our Havdalah service/program. We look forward to rescheduling it on a warm starry night.

Our "Hats" theme naturally evolved. After listening to many books about hats, fiction and non fiction, and documenting data about who wears a hat and why, it was time for us bring in some of our own and model our favorites. We counted and classified a total of 68 hats. (The morahs obviously brought in a few.) They were mostly caps and winter hats but there was also a sombrero, a bird hat, a hand made Hanukkah hat and an unusual fish hat. We looked hilarious! Then it was off again to the floor to draw ourselves in our hats. The resulting pictures and photographs make up our "Hooray for Hats" bulletin board. We hope to turn the pictures and photos into a class big book.

The miraculous holiday of Hanukkah kept us happily busy with all manner of activities. To begin with, the Frogs cut triangles and positioned them all by ourselves to create Jewish stars, which we then uniquely painted with watercolors. We observed that the sides of our triangles did not appear to be the same lengths, so we decided to measure them to know for sure. We used our unifix cubes and were a bit surprised to see that the three sides were exactly equal! Over the course of a week, we counted candles, recited blessings, marched like Maccabees, spun dreidels, discussed the miracle of the oil, sang lots of songs and created glittering menorahs with Morah Keren to name a few things. Our gifts to our families were definitely a labor of love. We pulled and poked and worked our hand muscles to mold menorahs of clay that we trust will be kept forever. As an added bonus, with some leftover clay, we actually shaped dreidels and painted them to go with the famous song. A few Hanukkah highlights stand out for us:  With Miss Carol's able direction we, along with the owls, sang and danced for the special group of grandmas and grandpas that make up Hazak. We were terrific! Also, we helped cook latkes with Morah Judy. Many, many were eaten and they were delicious! Finally, we had a great time with the Owls at our very own Hanukkah party, on what unexpectedly turned out to be our last day before winter break.

Lastly, our green thumbs were put to the test this month. We planted winter flower bulbs, Amaryllis and Narcissus.  We have been watching them grow and taking measurements weekly. We can't wait to see to see how much they have grown in our time away.

The Frogs surely enjoyed the huge snowfall and winter break, but we now look forward to returning to school in a new month and a new year!

We wish everyone a very Happy New Year 2010!

Morah Gayle and Morah Paula

Kitty Cat and Puppy Dog Update
KittenKickin' Kitty Cats

December was filled with Hanukkah fun! The children enjoyed learning new songs and the blessings for Hanukkah. The book, The Littlest Maccabee by Sylvia Rouss, is a wonderful Hanukkah story. Through this age appropriate tale the children could truly develop an early understanding of the history and meaning of the Hanukkah festival. The children took much pride in making beautiful Menorahs, picture frames and cards. Shopping in the Dreidel Shop and choosing gifts for their families was a very thought-filled job for many of the children. Latke making was so much fun!The children helped cut the potatoes and mix together the ingredients. Pushing the button on the mixer was the highlight! There was much discussion amongst the staff as to the preferred latke texture - shredded or pureed. Puree won out in the Kitty Cat class because all the children had at least one turn to push the button! The latkes were delicious and if they didn't care for the latke, they loved the applesauce! We enjoyed spinning the dreidel in paint and making a swirling design on the paper. We know one Hebrew letter and that would be gimmel - I win!

Thank you to all the Kitty Cat families for joining in the Hanukkah party fun. We wish all of you a safe, fun-filled winter break. Best Wishes for a happy and healthy New Year!

Morah Carol and Morah Karen

Puppy Dog   Precious Puppy Dogs

Happy December from the Puppy Dog class! This month has really flown by! We began and ended the month with special food...and lots of fun in between!

We had a blast getting ready for the Thanksgiving Feast!  Making pumpkin pies and Thanksgiving popsicles was a lot of tasty fun. The feast itself was so awesome to share with our families and the other BEECC kids. We especially liked singing Thanksgiving songs and the COOL pumpkin popsicles (who says you can't have ice cream when it's cold out?)!

Then on to Hanukkah! We discussed the story of Hanukkah, the miracles, and the special things associated with Hanukkah, such as menorahs and dreidels. We learned songs and played dreidel too. Morah Keren (Daniel's Mom) came to play Hanukkah games with us. Morah Claire from Hazak came to read us a Hanukkah story. Morah Judy helped us make latkes and each and every one of us ate at least two, most of us ate four! Our families loved our special presents and cards and had so much fun at our Hanukkah party...with more latkes and jelly doughnuts! We Puppy Dogs love to eat!

Our class would like to say goodbye to Miss Olivia and her family as they leave for England! We will miss you all and promise to be very good pen pals via e-mail! Remember Lieberman's....once a Puppy Dog, always a Puppy Dog!

The Puppy Dogs wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year and can't wait to tell you all the exciting things we will do in January....2010!

Love,
Morah Ellyn and Morah Jamie

Dolphin and Teddy Bear Update

Dolphin  Delightful Dolphins

Happy 2010! After the hectic pace of December, we hope you had a fun, but relaxing winter break.

We expect to get right back into the school groove after being off for a week and a half. The Dolphins will start up again with the children taking Flipper home most Thursdays, and start Show N' Tell/Share this month. Both activities give the children a chance to share and improve self-esteem.

In January we will be talking about winter -- snow, snowmen, snowflakes, and penguins, as well as dressing for the season. We will try to get outside each day if the playground is dry so please remember to send your children with warm coats, hats and mittens (gloves are not ideal at this age) so their precious bodies, heads and fingers will stay warm! FYI, we sing a cute song in class to teach the children how to put on their mittens: "thumb in the thumb hole, fingers all together, this is the way we dress in mitten weather."

The children will be studying a unit on The Five Senses later in January. By exploring our senses, we gain insight into the different types of learning. Students who enjoy touching things are usually tactile learners, while those who absorb songs and stories quickly -- simply by hearing them -- are often auditory learners. Others who are engrossed in the pictures as we read books and seem to learn easily by mimicking behavior are frequently visual learners. Of course, children learn best when exposed to a combination of learning styles, which we provide at BEECC.

Yom Huledet Sameach -- Happy Birthday, Trees! We will celebrate Tu B'Shevat at the very end of the month. While it is still winter here, in Israel the early trees will start to bloom and produce fruit. In conjunction with this lesson, we will talk about planting, do some planting of our own, and have a chance to taste different kinds of fruits at our class Tu B'Shevat "seder."

Once again, thanks for sharing your children with us; we are enjoying them tremendously and have already seem them grow in so many ways. If you ever have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

B'Shalom,
Morah Shari and Morah Dina

Teddy Bear  Terrific Teddy Bears

The month of December was very exciting for the Teddy Bear Class! We made potato latkes in the classroom, sang lots of Hanukkah songs and made many beautiful Hanukkah decorations to celebrate the "Festival of Lights." It was a pleasure to have the parents join us in the classroom for our Hanukkah party. We hope you enjoyed your winter break and all the early snow.

Although winter is here the Teddy Bears will not be hibernating. Through January and early February we will be exploring everything about winter such as snowflakes, snowmen, penguins and how to dress for the cold weather and more snow. The children have already been practicing putting on their coats, hats and mitten all by themselves. We will also begin an ongoing classroom Tzedakah project and the children will make individual Tzedakah boxes as well as one for the classroom.  More information will be coming home soon.

Yom Huledet Sameach to Lainey (December 20th) and Elana (January 25th)!

It is amazing how fast the past few months have gone by. Your children are truly wonderful, we feel blessed to have them in our class.

We wish you all a very happy and healthy 2010!

Morah Theresa & Morah Judi

Budding BEECCers Update
Pony Cartoon Perfect Ponies
January will be another fun month for the Ponies! We will be getting messy with winter art projects and will celebrate Tu B'Shevat, the birthday of the trees in Israel, at the end of the month. We will continue to focus on learning the class routine, transitioning from one activity to another, and exploring our senses through centers, art, food, and music. We will enjoy gross motor movement time in the Flex Space, and weather permitting, on the playground, as well. We will say "bye, bye" to Kate Winston who is moving up to the 2-day Teddy Bear class this month.

Wishing all of our Budding Beeccers and their families a Happy 2010!

B'Shalom,

Morah Shari
