Beth Emeth Annual Appeal

From CBEpedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beth Emeth Annual Appeal is the primary fundraising effort used to balance the financial needs of the synagogue with what is received from member dues. This campaign of voluntary giving provides the single greatest source of non-dues income, and enables Beth Emeth to continue to be a warm and welcoming full-service Conservative synagogue that's Here Today, and Here Tomorrow.

Etymology

“Annual Appeal”, derived from Annual (from 14th c. Latin an-nus, or “year”), and Appeal (from Old French apeler, to call out to; also form the Latin appellō, or "plea".)

Scholars argue the existence of an alternative origin (from the Yiddish, “Nu? You want I should daven in the dark? Write a check already!”)

Goals

    • Meet established Annual Appeal fundraising goal of $150K (Thanks to you we've reach our goal for
2012-13, but the campaign is officially open until April 30 and additional support is always welcome!)
    • Continue to increase participation by congregants

Why We Donate

Annual Appeal donations allow the synagogue to provide necessary services to the community while allowing dues to remain at a reasonable level. Through the generosity of donors, CBE continues to be a place to

  1. Worship together

  2. Learn together

  3. Celebrate together

  4. Find comfort and support in times of need

Annual Appeal Co-Chair Scott Levine explains the importance of the Annual Appeal on Yom Kippur 5773.

Tzedakah in Judaism

Tzedakah is a Hebrew word literally meaning righteousness but commonly used to signify charity. In Judaism, tzedakah refers to the religious obligation to do what is right and just, which Judaism emphasizes are important parts of living a spiritual life. Unlike philanthropy or charity, which is voluntary, tzedakah is seen as a religious obligation which all should perform. The act of tzedakah is in keeping with the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam--making the world a better place.
