American Judaism

Instructor: Rabbi Steve

Thursdays 7:30 - 9:00 PM

Start: 1/26/12  End: TBD

An abbreviated version of Rabbi Steve’s popular GWU course, consisting of a survey of Jewish religious life, focusing on the various forms of American Judaism (Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist, etc.) as they have developed and continue to evolve. Emphasis will be placed on the issues and challenges facing contemporary Judaism, including such “post-60’s Judaisms” as Jewish Renewal, Humanistic Judaism, etc.

Fee: $18 Mem*/$25 Non-Mem

The Worship Service: History, Structure & Content
Instructor: Rabbi Steve
Sundays, 12:00 - 1:00 PM
2/19, 3/18, 4/22

Services are an enigma to many of us, as they seem to be nothing more than a multitude of prayers strung together. It might come as a surprise to learn that each service has a definite structure and flow. In this 3-part series, we shall examine the History, Structure and Content of the service. Join us and you’ll feel much more comfortable and “in control” during services.

Fee: $18

Torah Study Group
One Saturday a Month, Following Morning Services

The Beth Emeth Torah Study group meets at least once a month after Saturday kiddush to study and discuss a prepared text on the parasha. The format is informal, and drop-ins are welcome. Look for us where the kiddush is held (social hall) or in the library. Exact dates for each month will be published in the Beth Emeth calendar, weekly announcements, and last minute updates on the cbe-va-tora@yahoogroups.com email list  (please consider signing up).

No cost, no registration required.

Business Ethics

Instructor: Rabbi Steve

Sundays 12:00-1:00 PM

11/13, 2/12, 4/15

The Madoff scandal, which involved so many Jews as both perpetrators and victims, inevitably raises deep questions in people’s minds about the relationship between Judaism and business. In this 3-part series we shall address and examine the fundamental principles of business ethics from a Jewish perspective.

  • Part 1: Overview

  • Part 2: Advertising, Marketing & Pricing

  • Part 3: Fraud, Insider Trading

Fee:  $18.00 Mem /  $25.00 Non-Mem
