CBE Adult Enrichment Online Registration
Every few years Congregation
Beth Emeth offers a series of classes leading to adults having a group Bar
or Bat Mitzvah. This page is primarily for use by the participants in
the program and prospective participants as we organize the 2008-2010
programs.
Program Basics (notes
from October, 2008 meeting of those expressing interest)
-
The level of
Hebrew knowledge and background varied widely and it was agreed that
there would be a need for two levels of study, one for those starting
from scratch and another for those with rudimentary knowledge of Hebrew,
in the form of a one-year and two-year track.
-
The highest
level of interest for Judaics study fell into three categories: Life
Cycle, Holidays and Worship (Prayer and Services)
-
It was agreed
that classes would meet weekly and follow the Religious School model,
one hour of Hebrew language and one hour of Judaics study. It remains
be determined if there will be one or two teachers and that fact may
change over the course of the one or two year programs.
-
The best time
to meet for everyone assembled was Sunday afternoons, between the hours
of 2 and 4 PM.
-
CBE Adult
Enrichment currently has two classes scheduled to begin on Monday,
October 27, Jewish Literacy
and Beginning Hebrew Literacy,
both taught by Mike Wikes and scheduled to run for eight weeks. It was
decided that these classes offer a good starting point for the people in
the one-year track, offering the Hebrew and Judaics components in
one-hour increments, as desired.
-
We’ve reserved a date for the first of our
proposed Adult B’nai Mitzvah -- for the one-year track: September 26,
2009, (Shabbat Shuva)
Initial
Class Schedule
-
We have made
changes to the adult enrichment schedule in hopes of better
accommodating the Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes, both the one and two
year tracks. Rabbi Steve and I (Mike Wikes) did the best we could, given
teaching schedules, to accommodate the request for Sunday classes.
-
The Jewish
Literacy Class, originally scheduled for Monday evenings will be
switched to Sunday, 1 – 2 PM, taught by Rabbi Steve, beginning
October 26.
-
The Beginning
Hebrew Literacy Class, also originally scheduled for Monday evening will
be switched to Sunday, 2 – 3 PM, taught by Mike Wikes. This is
the class for those on the one-year Bar/Bat Mitzvah track, beginning
October 26.
-
The Aleph
Bet, introduction to Hebrew for those on the two-year track will be
offered Sunday, Noon to 1 PM, starting date TBD, when we secure a
teacher.
-
So, whichever track you are on, you can
attend one hour of Hebrew and one hour of literacy on Sunday.
Future Modules
-
We have also
mapped out the future of the literacy program in 8-week modules that can
be attended by students in both tracks.
-
Module 1
(beginning Oct 28): Telushkin book. An historical overview of critical
Jewish texts
-
Module 2,
January – March: Holidays and Festivals
-
Module 3,
after Pesach: Life Cycle
-
Module 4,
summer ’09: Worship
-
Judaics for
the two-year track will continue in fall 2009 according to the group
consensus on topics to study.
-
The Bar/Bat Mitzvah date for the two-year
track is still to be determined.
